What is Defensible Space?
Defensible Space is the area within the perimeter of a parcel where basic wildfire protection practices are implemented, providing the key point of defense from an approaching wildfire or escaping structure fire. The area is characterized by the establishment and maintenance of emergency vehicle access, emergency water reserves, street names and building identification, and fuel modification measures.

What are the Requirements to Maintain a Defensible Space?
The requirements to create and maintain a Defensible Space are specific to the surrounding zone as outlined by the State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection. Below are the definitions and specific requirements for each zone pursuant to San Diego County Code of Regulatory Ordinances 68.401 - 68.407
Zone 1, called the "Defensible Space Zone", is the area within 50 feet of a structure or property line.
Zone 2, called the "Reduced Fuel Zone", is the area from 50 feet to 100 feet of a structure or property line.
